Charlton House

On Thursday 28th July 2016, Charlton House will be transported back in time to 1918 as it prepares to open its doors to the wounded men of the First World War.

A hospital ward with beds and original WW1 equipment such as wheelchairs, bed pans and stretchers, as well as nurses and patients will greet visitors to the House on the day.

In the ‘Soldiers Recreation Room’, visitors can play games with the wounded and the nurses, take up some crafts and discover the fascinating rich history of the role of the Red Cross during the First World War.

Weather permitting, there will be traditional games in the grounds and the chance to play a game or two of crochet or quoits with the nurses, house staff and patients.

Professor Alison Fell, of Leeds University and Gateways to the First World War, will give a talk on Nursing in the First World War at 12.30pm.

And Ivy, a Charlton World War One VAD Nurse will be there to tell you all about her life as a voluntary nurse at the Brook Hospital and Charlton House.
