International Women’s Day 2023

8th March is International Women’s Day. Our day to celebrate women’s achievements and advocate for gender equality. It is a time to reflect on the progress made and acknowledge the work that still needs to be done to ensure equal rights and opportunities. Let’s all fully #EmbraceEquity. Sadly a recent study by PWC on pay has revealed that the pay gap between men and women is now 14.4% and not in our favour. And that at this rate, it will still take 50 years at least to reach parity.

Equity isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s a must-have. And it’s critical to understand the difference between equity and equality.

But it doesn’t just have to be across one day! Here are a few ways that we can all celebrate International Women’s Day every day:

“When women support each other, incredible things happen.”

Support Women-Owned Businesses One way to celebrate International Women’s Day all year round is to support women-owned businesses. Over the years, I feel very privileged to have met and supported many inspirational Greenwich women in business. All of them are passionate about what they do, many with young families or other challenging personal circumstances – all trying to make a difference.

Women entrepreneurs still face unique challenges in the business world, and by supporting our businesses, we can help to level the playing field. Whether it’s by shopping at a female-owned store, hiring a woman-owned and led business, or investing startup, we can help to empower women and promote gender equality.

Volunteer for a Women’s Organisation. Many organisations work to empower women and promote gender equality. Volunteering for one of these organisations is a great way to celebrate International Women’s Day. Whether mentoring young girls, supporting women who have experienced gender-based violence or advocating for policy change, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference.

Learn About Women’s History Another way to celebrate International Women’s Day is to learn. Women have significantly contributed to society throughout history, but their stories are often overlooked or undervalued. By learning about the achievements of women in fields such as science, politics, art, and literature, we can gain a greater appreciation for the role that we have played in shaping our world.

Advocate for Gender Equality Finally, one of the most important ways to celebrate International Women’s Day is to advocate for gender equality. This could be by contacting your elected representatives to advocate for policy change, speaking out against gender-based violence, or simply promoting gender equality daily. By taking action to promote gender equality, we can help to create a world where all women have the opportunity to thrive.

International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women but also to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done to ensure that women have equal rights and opportunities.

Events are another way to celebrate International Women’s Day. By bringing people together to discuss and celebrate women’s achievements, we can build a stronger sense of community and promote gender equality. Take a look at some in-person and virtual events across London here.

By supporting women-owned businesses, volunteering for women’s organizations, learning about women’s history, hosting discussions or events, and advocating for gender equality, we can all promote women’s empowerment and gender equality.
