Five Best Stews, GreenwichmumsIt’s cold outside and the perfect thing to warm up you and your family up is a nice delicious warm stew. There are so many wonderful things about making a winter stew. Not only are they easy to make but they fill the belly and are pretty healthy meal choice.

Many of them you can cook in slow cooker, which is a miracle tool for a busy mum. All you have to do is put all the ingredients into the pot, set it on low and then you have a delicious meal already made waiting for you and your family in the evening. As an American in Greenwich I’ve referenced some US food blogs – I would love to hear suggestions of any great UK food finds….

So here are our 5 best stews to make this winter.

1. BEEF STEW WITH ROASTED WINTER VEGETABLES. This classic stew is perfect for the cold, wintery weather. It is great comfort food and goes perfect with some yummy mash potatoes on the side. 2. “GUMBO-LAYA” STEW. Looking for a stew that has a bit of kick to it? “Gumbo-laya” stew with its spicy sausage, chicken and shrimp can really hit the spot. With the weather so cold, it’s nice to get that mouth hot! This stew has a lot of zesty flavors and the combination of chicken and shrimp with spicy sausage is delicious. 3. LENTIL AND BEAN STEW. If you are looking for a vegan, healthier alternative stew this lentil and bean stew is a great option. This stew is made with lentils and very basic vegetables such as beans and mushrooms. This stew takes a bit more attention so it is best made when the kids are down for a nap. 4. SLOW COOKER COUNTRY CHICKEN STEW. Want a delicious stew that is pretty easy to make where you can set it and forget it? This stew is it. This perfect chicken stew is so delicious and will having you imagining what it’s like sitting warm by a fire out on the country. This stew is so easy to make all you have to do is gather all the ingredients, set your slow cooker on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours and forget about it! 5. A DELICIOUS HEARTY CHILI. There is nothing better than a warm bowl of chili. This recipe is a bit spicy but goes great with shredded cheese sprinkled on top and a little scoop of sour cream to balance the spice. You can make this recipe in a slow cooker too. All you need to do is brown the beef, throw all the rest of the ingredients into the slow cooker and set it to cook for eight hours on low. What a perfect meal!
